Tokatea

The brief

A house built to connect its interior with the immediate setting and the wider landscape beyond.

The approach

The steep site is benched into platforms that step down the hill, forming the living, dining and sleeping areas. A concrete ‘ground’ follows the natural contours, and a flowing roof works as both shelter and inhabitable landscape. Large sliding doors and louvres open the rooms to the surroundings, so the connection to the landscape can be dialled up or down.
