Fenwick Garden Studio

Underused garden → a self-contained studio, built-in shed, and a planted garden.

The brief

Create a dedicated space to suit home working without extending the house itself: a quiet room at the bottom of the garden to work in and retreat to.

The approach

A compact garden studio sits along the rear boundary, clad in dark charred timber (shou sugi ban) so it settles into the planting rather than dominating it. The structure rests on screw pile foundations and features a large opening skylight to maximise airflow. It features a 'garden shed' cupboard, as well as internal storage, two workstations, a home cinema and hi-fi corner. Underfloor heating ensures the most efficient use of the internal space. Full-height glazing faces the garden, and a run of re-used paving with deep planted borders ties the studio to the house. The rear living space opens up with sliding doors and rooflights, so the garden reads as part of the home.
